Apopka, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-St Petersburg Combined Statistical Area. The Apopka post office was established in 1887 and discontinued in 1907. Postal service resumed in 1911 when Apopka incorporated as a town. In 1914, the first airmail service between Miami and Tampa was started by airplane through Apopka to Sanford and then on to St Cloud via Kissimmee. Apopka's name comes from "Apalachicola" or "Cheechamauga." Indian settlers called this area "Poultney" after Captain John Poultney who explored this area for Spain during the 17th century with his squadron of ships the "Golden Hind". He named it after his native village of Palatine on Long Island in New York City where he had been born some time earlier. Captain Poultney mapped much of present day Florida and more than one hundred miles (160 km) of Alabama before his death in 1695 during an expedition led by Governor Manuel de la Vega to explore Florida's interior. A palatine means a small countenance or face from ancient Rome while cheechamauga means(chief). So they got two different words which became locally known as apopka or apalachicola meaning place near long island according to their location at that time along with other places around that area like Port Charlotte also being renamed due to Spanish influence such as Cheechamuskee Creek coming from Pensacola Bay witch origins are still unknown today but most likely derived form Atchafalaya River flowing into Gulf of Mexico originally
