In 1907 a post office was established at Apopka with the name Pembroke Pines. On November 15, 1915, Apopka became a city when it was annexed by Orlando. At the time its population was 7,083 residents and it contained no schools or churches. In 1957 Apopka amalgamated with Kissimmee to form Sanford which has continued to grow since then. Today's population of over 100,000 people makes Apopka one of the most populous towns in Central Florida!
The town of Apopka, Florida was founded by John H. Holland in 1853. The town was named for Mrs. Humphrey Apopka, who donated land to the new town site. The first post office was established in 1854, and the first settler in the town was John Pritchard. In 1858, a Methodist church was built in the town and it became known as "the BaptistChurch." The Apopka School District was formed in 1895 and Apopka Middle school opened its doors in 1896. In 1912, the name of the school changed to "Apopka High School." A fire destroyed most of the buildings on May 4th, 1973, however, due to an electrical short Circuit; all students were able to successfully return to class that day. On November 2nd of that year, voters passed a referendum awarding ownership of city hall and city-owned land (later renamed Park Avenue) to the townspeople; this allowed for more incorporated municipalities within Broward County and made it easier forApopka residents to get involved with their local government decisions.
