Apopka, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent white settler in Apopka was James Caldwell who founded a cabin on Indianola Creek in 1827. In 1828 he and his wife married John Yorba and moved to what is now Orange County. They were among the first Europeans to settle in central Florida. James Caldwell's cabin still stands today within Apopka boundaries. In 1829 Daniel Boone left Jacksonville for Gainesville with his family and started the first European settlement west of the Mississippi River in what is now Polk County. He named it "Apopka" after his place of birth (Alphonse Henri Jourdan's estate near Paris). A post office called "Apopka" was established in 1835, but no evidence exists that any residents lived there until after 1840 when a Mr. Hickey built a house on Old Fort Niagara Road about two miles east of present day Apopka off State Road 474 (then US 1) for himself and his family6 Apopka officially became a town on December 15, 1850 when it was annexed by Gainesville7 After years of growth and development, Apopka had its own school system through 1893; its own fire department from 1907 until 1959; its own library from 1909 until 1971; its own water supply from 1907 until 1969; and its own hospital from 1924 until 19638 A new courthouse was completed in 19129 The original store building still stands today along North Avenue inside the limits of the current city hall10

Apopka, Florida is a small town in the panhandle of Florida. It is located about 10 miles east of the mouth of the Apopka River on Interstate 95. The population was 5,696 at the 2000 census. The name "Apopka" means "the place where the warlock sleeps." The town was named for John A. Poindexter, who in 1868 surveyed and discovered what would become Apopka River. The town was founded by white men from Georgia in 1874 as an agricultural community to provide market access for settlers coming up the Florida Trail. In 1907, Apopka became a city and it has since grown into a major center for commerce and culture in central Floridas Panhandle region
Apopka was founded in 1868 by J.F. Stone, who named it after his brother-in-law and business partner, Augustus A. Post. The Apopka post office opened in 1870 and remained in operation until 1959. In 1893, the town had a population of 100 people and became a small agricultural community with few businesses other than a general store. By the turn of the century, Apopka's population had declined to about 50 people and the town developed into a rural farming community with few industry or services other than agriculture. The Apopka post office closed in 1961 and most of its operations were discontinued soon afterwards.
