The city of Apopka, Florida was founded in 1907 by J.D. Morgan and his brother-in-law, George L. Parish. The brothers began a small farm on the present site of the city with six cows and one hog. They named their farm "Morgan Farms." The Morgans were farming families from East Tennessee who came to Apopka in 1907 to start a new life. The first store in town was built by J.D.'s father, John Morgan, on North Main Street in 1912. In 1916, J.D.'s mother died and he married her sister, Lillie Greenough Morgan (1892-1974). They also built the first school in town which was opened in 1918 as the Apopka Female High School/Apopka Male High School hybrid program using funds from Apopka's first mayor, James Wetherbee (1901-1978). In 1927, Mayor Wetherbee erected a plaque at the corner of Pleasant Avenue and Old Spanish Road commemorating those who had made Apopka what it is today including farmers J.D., George L., Mabel Addison (1890-1969), Reuben Trueblood (1893-1966), Drue Cates(1902-1981), Harry Weisman(1920-2000) and Maynard Ferguson (1920-2009). In 1951 Mayor Wetherbee gave land bordering Unity Boulevard east of downtown to build an agricultural college known as Agricultural College Park which became State University of Florida in 1962 when that state was created from part of Florida's old Seminole Tribe Territory lost to white settlement after Jaguars won the civil war
