Apopka is a small city located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Apopka was founded in 1872 by James Fenton and John Crouch as an agricultural center on the east side of what is now Interstate 95 in central Polk County. In 1907 it became the county seat for Polk County after Jacksonville moved to that location. A post office called "Apopka" was established in 1872, and remained open until 1915; its first postmaster was Jno Pugh. In 1927 Apopka incorporated as a village under the name "Ocoee". The town changed its name to "Apopka" on November 10th 1959 when it became an incorporated city pursuant to state statute 8-5-2 (the City Code) which allows cities with a population over 5,000 to become towns with voting rights and limited police powers; Township 2 then annexed portions of Township 1 eastward from I-95 (and including present day Apopka). The current mayor is Les Johnson who has held office since January 1st 2020

The Apopka Valley Forge National Historical Park preserves some evidence from early Paleoamerican occupation including petroglyphs and tool marks dating back to about 12,000 years ago. The area around where Apopka now stands was once used for hunting and gathering by various cultures including the Seminole Indian Tribe who lived there before European settlers arrived in what is today Polk County in 1778 A.D.. In 1879 J.W Dickey purchased 640 acres (269 hectares) southeast of present day Apopka from James Hogg for $1,600 and began development which led to the incorporation of the town in 1903 Municipal boundaries changed again on March 15th 1912 when Fort Myers gained city status making Apopka part of that city Limits until 1925 when it reverted back to its original Polk County limits
In 1821, George Apopka was the first white settler in what is now Apopka, Florida. In 1832, he and his wife, Nancy McIntyre, founded a log cabin on the banks of the St Johns River. They were the first people to live in what is now Apopka Township.
