In 1892, Apopka fertilizer manufacturer James A. Hickey donated land to create a shooting range adjacent to his business. This range became known as "Hickey's Park." In 1923, Apopka businessman Harry Hargrave donated $75,000 to build an addition to the shooting range that would house a library and museum dedicated toApopka Rifleman's History and Heritage. Apopka, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1837 Apopka was founded by James A. Choate and John Purdy as a small military post on the Presidio River near present-day Ocala, Florida. The post served as a base of operations for Choate's Indian Expedition against Seminole Indians in 1838-39 and 1840-41; it also helped to store supplies for this expedition when it passed through Apopka on its way from Jacksonville to Tampa Bay. The first settler in Apopka was Isaac Brewer who arrived about 1830 from Hartford, Connecticut. He cleared 640 acres (248 hectares) of forested land and built a cabin on what is now US 1 south of US 192 east of the river. In 1835 he sold his rights to the town to Jens Sorenson who named it after his mother's birthplace – Aalborg, Denmark – but continued to live there until his death in 1865. Sorenson's son Absalom (1821-1892) purchased more land around Apopka and developed it into one of the largest cotton farms in Florida; he also built two churches and several homes including what is now Apopka High School (established in 1889). His family became very active in politics and were among the signers of the United States Constitution when they moved to Washington D.C., where they lived until their deaths there in 1893 and 1902 respectively.
