Altamonte Springs, Florida is a city located in the Miami-Dade County, Florida metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, Altamonte Springs had a population of 80,609. The city was named after Mountaintop Ranch in Texas and it was founded by Capt. George W. Altamont and his brother William on November 2, 1887 as a small agricultural community known as Altamonte Springs. In 1912, the City Council decided to change its name to honor General John Foust's reputation for heroism during the First World War. On October 30 of that year, General Foust's body was brought from France to be buried at Ft. Lauderdale–Hollywood Cemetery with full military honors. This building served as our first municipal courthouse until 1935 when downtown hall became housing for the fire marshal’s office In 1935 Mayor Aubrey Carey designated Park Avenue between Main Street and State Road A1A as “General Grant Boulevard” in honor of America’s most renowned general who had died two years earlier while serving with distinction during World War I That same year Parks Department employees moved into their new Firemen’s Union Headquarters Building which now fronts Park Ave., just south of US 192 However due primarily to budgetary constraints parking lots along both sides - including today's Government Parking Garage - were developed over time resulting in some confusion about where buildings actually sit . Today only one side (west) remains undeveloped . In 1957 Public Works Director Earl Bostic designated portions east side from SR A1A up throughSR 620 (now part of Business Loop 95) as “Mayor Carey Boulevard” . For many years this designation was respected but recent construction has caused streetscape issues . Today much east side development occurs on old Realtor Association property As early as 1887 Captain George Waltamont bought land nestled among pine trees outside present day Altamonte Springs on what is now Mapleton Rd., Plot No.: 6 Chalfant Dr., Grid: N/A Just minutes after taking possession Captain Waltamont named his new settlement Mountaintop Ranch after his ranching ancestors who settled thereabouts around 1800 AD according to local historical records/. In 1912 whenCity Council decided unanimously not To change its name back To Naples they also changed its nickname "Altammytes Spring" back To Naples so everyone could finally get used To how things were gonna sound without all those Ali Baba jokes going around town! haaha! The original name stuck around however until 1930 whenPark Ave between Main St And SR A1a became “General Grant Boulevard". After WWII when downtown housing got scarce Altemonte started developing Friendship Heights which included moving into current Government Parking Garage lot across from I-95/I-10 just south off SR 620 well before it even came online! From here it went downhill good ol' Altamytes .....poor management decisions combined with numerous hurricanes over ensuing decades have led us right back here again ..... sorry friends! pretty bad huh? Anyway enough about me lets get down to businessshall we? LOL
