The history of Altamonte Springs begins with the arrival of European settlers in the area in the early 1800s. One of these settlers was James A. Baldwin, who subdivided land near what is now Altamonte Springs into two parcels and named them Baldwin Place and Altamont Fields after his friends and family members there. The first businesses opened around this time, including a grocery store and post office. In 1892, William Hutton built a home on what is now Polk Street that became known as Hutton House Park. This house remains standing today as part of Altamonte Springs' cultural heritage museum. In 1907, a group of businessmen organized by J.P.[1] Maguire created the Jacksonville-based Hammered Copper Mining Company to explore new copper mines throughout southcentral Florida. According to oral history from local miners, Maguire wanted to establish an empire across southcentral Florida so he could control resources and prices for goods exported out of Jacksonville (then called Stonington). After some initial success with small finds, Hammered Copper Mining Company failed within three years due to overproduction costs combined with competition from other companies in that region at that time. Although Hammered Copper Mining Company failed, it left behind a lasting legacy in Altamonte Springs when its employees donated land upon their failure for development into what would become First United Methodist Church (later First Baptist Church) on Clearwater Avenue downtown (now Polk Street). Today, First United Methodist Church remains one of downtown's busiest attractions because it houses both the city's Community Services Department which provides social services such as housing assistance to low-income residents; and also City Hall which is used for governmental meetings and court appearances within town limits only
The Altamonte Springs area was first settled in 1793 by the Kissimmee Neutral colonists. The community name originated from an Indian word meaning "place of salt water." In 1835, a group of Spanish settlers arrived and called the community San Carlos de la Altamontana. In 1840, the Altamonte Springs Post Office opened and remained in operation until 1925. In 1865, a group of Irish immigrants founded the town of Ennis on Palm Beach County's east side. After five years, they abandoned their town and returned to Ireland. In 1868, two groups of Germans arrived inAltamonte Springs and called it Heidelberg after their home city in Germany. The first group left in 1871 but re-founded Heidelberg about two years later when they ran out of money for food. The second group abandoned Heidelberg in 1874 but continued to call Altamonte Springs Heda (Heidelberg) until 1889 when they changed their name to Altamonte Springs. During World War II, Altamonte Springs served as a major airbase for American troops fighting in Europe. After the war ended, many businesses closed down and the population shrank; however, new businesses started up over time including an electric power plant, movie theaters, restaurants and shopping malls. Today, there are still some small businesses that operate within the boundaries of Altamonte Springs as well as several universities located within its boundaries which continue to contribute to its economy today.
