In 1935 he sold his share in the center to developer Harry Lawson for $2 million - making it one of the largest sales ever made by a Jacksonville developer at that time. 3 years laterLawson merged with fellow Jacksonville developer Mifflin Hunt to form Gainesville Development Company and plan revitalization for much of north central Florida including areas surrounding Interstate 441 (I-441) including parts around Altamonte Lakeshore Boulevard/SR 847 – now SR 712 – which followed Gadsdenpah Parkway from I-441 south into downtown Gainesville before terminating at SR 212 west of town limits just north of Rollins College campus; this area commonly known as Old Town Gainesville today includes much older growth along SR 12A from Gadsdenpah Parkway entrance into town limits through Center Drive/Highway 27 past Rollins College campus; this newer development generally parallels I-441 corridor between University Avenue eastward into town limits then northwest across Centre Drive towards SR 213 where it joins I-4 41 eastbound concurrent with University Avenue: [these plans] were never completed due to economic conditions during World War II when Gainesville was primarily an agricultural center providing food for troops stationed in nearby Fort Walton Beach; however during recent decades many new apartment complexes and businesses have been built along I-4441 corridor [/i], giving rise to the nickname 'Gainesville Square'. It is bordered by Doral to the south and west, Pompano Beach to the north and east, and Kendall Park to the northeast. Downtown Altamonte Springs has a main commercial district with many large anchored stores as well as smaller businesses along Spring Street close to major thoroughfares such as US 1 and SW First Avenue. The arrival of Europeans in what is now Altamonte Springs began in 1821 when American Revolutionary War General James Wilkinson arrived from Georgia with his soldiers. Wilkinson built a cabin on what is now Spring Street near today's Government Center before selling it in 1827 to John Augustus Keyes. Keyes' son, Daniel Keyes Jr., purchased land around Spring Street and government office buildings were constructed there during the 1830s including a courthouse which served until 1915. In 1836, Keys sold land east of present-day I-75 for $30 per acre (0–1/2 dollars per square mile). This grant became known as "Keyes Heights". In 1840, Captain George Atwater leased 2 acres (10 m²) on what are now Main streets NW and NW 2nd Avenues from Henry Waddell for £5 per annum payable annually thereafter; this lease became effective February 3rd that year after Atwater had made improvements thereto including building a millrace which powered an important water wheel used for irrigation purposes across SW 4th Avenue from where it emptied into Lake Washington about two miles away. On March 20th of that year, Altamonte Springs received its first white settler when Edwin Sayers arrived with his family from England aboard HMS Beagle under Captains John Rossiter and David Livingstone.. Sayers built what are now SE 2nd Ave NE & NW 4th St between 17 May & 10 Jul 1840 while living on property he had acquired just east of present day SW 3rd Ave & SW 4th Ave near today’s intersection of SE 3rd Ave NE & NW 4th St.. On October 12 th 1840 both Atwater’s Millstream Power Plant located just northwest cornerSW 3rd Ave &NW4thAvenue went out of operation due to overloading caused by heavy rains creating flooding downstream riverbank easterly acrossSW4thAvenue – note “about two miles away” because at that time River Bank extended only about one half mile northeastward parallel towardpresent day Northwest Drive (& Canal Zone), thenceforth called simply RiverBank . That same month saw establishment of Miami Life Insurance Company with initial capital stock consisting of five pounds sterling.. By 1861 Jacksonville was home to more than 1 million people while Tampa boasted only 711 residents making it one of Florida's ten most populous cities... Jacksonville lost its status as #1 by 1870 however it never relinquished its claim as #2 because Tampa continued growing rapidly while Jacksonville fell behind... Jim Crenshaw who served three terms Mayor (1872-76) helped rejuvenate downtown Jacksonville which led eventually to annexation by Altamonte Springs in 1908... In 1912 Altamonte Springs annexed Pompano Beach also becoming one municipality within Miami-Dade County...
