This period also saw construction of several schools including Deane High School (1910), White Sands Middle School (1911) and Taft High School (1920). In 1949 local developer Harry Weisbrot acquired 1/4 mile (0.6 km) north of his original development site located at US-441/SR-2 & US-1 Business Loop for $600,000 dollars which he used to build his current shopping center complex known as "Weisbrot Plaza". After years of growth within the community due to new retail developments by locals and visitors alike, work began on what would becomeAltamonte Hills Shopping Center in October 1992 which replaced much older Mallory Square Shopping Center closed down in 1991 after more than 30 years operation! A large shopping center was built here in the late 1960s following construction of Interstate 4 (I-4) across Highway 54 near its intersection with US-321/US-444/SR-171 near Lake Nona. In 1880, an area of Altamonte Springs known as the "Goodlands" was purchased by Captain J.D. Mackey from the Seminole Tribe for $2,000. The Goodlands were a large tract of land that included parts of today's Altamonte Springs and north Palm Beach County. Mackey developed the area into a small town with several stores, a school, and a sawmill. In 1892, Altamonte Springs had its first post office and in 1903 it became the capital of Florida.
