The journal ceased publication in 1865 but was reborn as "Altamont Sentinel" published monthly until 1903 when it merged with the more established "Atlantic Monthly Publications", which continued to publish it until 1951. In 1892, "Guns & Ammo" magazine was published for one year before folding due to financial difficulties caused by prohibitionism. A new magazine called "Banana Republic Gazette" started publication on April 1st 1893 (the date that prohibition ended) and lasted for six months before folding as well due to lack of patronage from readers who had grown tired of reading about Prohibitionist politics within an NRA-controlled society. On October 15th 1898, another new magazine called "Action Sunday Journal" began publication followed two weeks later by “Wild West Review” and finally on November 3rd 1899 “Gun News” published every Saturday morning). Altamonte Springs is located on "The Hills", an unincorporated community that lies within the city limits of Fort Lauderdale. The Hills were named for General John A. Hill and his men who fought in the Seminole Wars and during Reconstruction. Since its incorporation as a village in 1892, Altamonte Springs has undergone several changes and expansions; it now encompasses over square miles (2 km²). Some of these changes have been driven by industry - including manufacturing of plastics and other materials until 1974, when it shifted to South Korea - but others have come about because of residential growth or annexation by adjacent cities such as West Palm Beach or Sunrise. In recent years there has been a concerted effort to revitalize downtown Altamonte Springs with new streetscape work, retail development and reopening of some historic buildings - most notably the old courthouse which reopened in 2014 after more than a century closed down due to lack of funding. In terms of ethnicity, Altamonte Springs contains both Spanish-speaking immigrants from Latin America (mainly from Mexico) as well as English speakers from England, Scotland and Ireland; many people also speak Portuguese (the national language spoken in Brazil). The first Europeans to visit what is now Altamonte Springs were Spanish explorers who charted a course through present-day Palm Beach County in 1565 for exploration of South America. They named the site Santa María de la Concepción because they found an Indian village there that had been abandoned by its previous occupants. A small community developed around Stonington Harbor on the mouth of Lake Altamonte near modern day Altamonte Springs before it was drained in 1835 by Major General Antonio Lopez y Gómez to make way for Coconut Creek. The town was reestablished as Altamonte Springs about 1876 when citrus growers bought land from Captain John Sutter and opened up a new industry based on growing fruit trees within walking distance of their homes. After World War II, agricultural production shifted to cotton and other crops until Orlando became the corporate center for American manufacturing after Interstate Highway 95 was routed through central Florida in the early 1960s; this led to heavy development around Stonington Harbor with little attention paid to adjacent neighborhoods which continue to experience high levels of poverty and crime today. In recent years, growth has accelerated around Altamonte Springs Boulevard which runs between downtown and Highland Park; this has led to increased traffic congestion on I-95 and close access to schools and shopping malls located along nearly every block within walking distance of either downtown or Highland Park
