Altamonte Springs is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Altamonte Springs comes from the Apache word alamatí which means "place with cottonwoods." The area now known as Altamonte Springs was first settled by Seminole Indians in the late 18th century. In 1837, Captain John C. Smith discovered and named the creek that flows through Altamonte Springs after General Andrew Jackson's attending officer in Indian Territory at that time, Colonel James Wilkinson (1797-1868). In 1905, two brothers—John and Harry Waddell—named their land near Altamonte Springs after home states of Arkansas and Alabama respectively. Arthur Ashe won his first professional tennis match there on July 4th of that year against then-Noah Webster of American Samoa just three miles from downtown Tampa Bay. This event helped spur development around what would become Altamonte Springs over the next few decades. When it came to shopping centers and other commercial developments during this time period, many credit Park City Shopping Center east of Interstate 75 with being one of the most important center stages during this era in South Florida's history; it served as an anchor for many small businesses who were drawn to its location across I-75 from downtown Tampa Bay – making it a key player in early suburban development patterns throughout much of Southwest Florida (including today'sAltamonte Spring neighborhoods). A major change took place when Interstate 275 bypassed Altamonte Spring altogether northbound between SR-441 (now US-27) and SR-1 (then US Highway 1), replaced by I-275 about 10 years later in 1985 – eliminating its main shopping district thereby reducing traffic congestion along Main Street within town boundaries while also creating new areas for growth such as Lakeland Boulevard - becoming one of South Florida’s busiest freeways both day and night due to its proximity to so many major cities including Miami Beach and Orlando – further fuelingresidential values hereabouts over time. During much of this period more than $5 billion worth of investment had been made primarily inside town limits without ever reaching out beyond these boundaries into adjoining Sarasota County; beginning with local developer Charlie Weisburger’s purchase/development rights to land northeast corneringSR 349 south of old Asbury Road back in 1961 following plans by neighboring Sarasota County Supervisor Tom Lawlor initially designed only for agricultural use adjacent to burgeoning Plantation Lakes Estates subdivision developed thereafter under current plans by Chariot Development Co., majorityowned & managed by mayor Bob Buckhorn et al.......Altamonte springs retail area now totaling approximately 350 acres....At present there are more than 100 stores located within or vicinity Of Town Limits......The primary focus has always been housing..... Over time several large theme parks have been developed nearby such as Hard Rock Stadium / Hollywood Casino where recent construction has created hundreds if not thousands jobs.........Today AltamonTE SPRINGS boasts world class dining options available all regardless whether you're looking for healthy fare or some nice steak - including several high quality Italian restaurants....... The Altamonte Springs, Florida history begins with the arrival of European settlers in the area in the early 1800s. The first Europeans to arrive were French traders and missionaries who built a trading post at what is now Altamonte Springs in 1814. In 1821, Major General Andrew Jackson visited the area and ordered all Native American scouts appointed by him to leave Florida because he felt they posed a threat to white settlers. The first black people to live in Altamonte Springs arrived around this time as well. They came from Georgia and were brought over by African Americans working on plantations near Jacksonville. By 1875, there were about 100 black people living in Altamonte Springs. In 1915, Alum Rock Mining Company was founded inAltamonte Springs and began producing coal for local businesses and consumers. The company continued production until it closed down in 1951. During its time, Alum Rock Mining Company produced more than 1 million tons of coal!
