The first place that Europeans discovered in what is now Sun County was Altamonte Springs which they named after their captain who sighted it while exploring Florida's panhandle in 1565-66. The area around today's Altamonte Springs had been inhabited by Apalachee Indians since before European discovery. Apalachee Indian Removal Act of 1846 began with the removal of all Apalachee Indians from Seminole Nation lands west of Tampa Bay. Of those removed, almost half were killed or died as a result of disease or violence. The remainder were transported into Alabama where many eventually became Americanized and adopted Christianity. In 1849, J P O'Neill purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) near present day Altamonte Springs from Antonio Garcia for $2 per acre ($4 per head). In 1850 he built his first home there on this property - an orange grove still stands today next to his home known as "The Grove". At this time oranges were being brought overland by wagonloads from Miami Valley through what is now Tallahassee Territory; thus O'Neill acquired one of Florida's earliest agricultural accomplishments." "O'Neill also developed a citrus industry that would become one of Florida's leading exports for years to come." The Altamonte Springs area was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1868, a group of Seminole Indians led by Florida's first Seminole War Chief, Osceola, arrived in the area. They named their new settlement after a small stream that ran through the area. The settlers were soon able to build homes and businesses, and began trading with other tribes in the region. By 1870, Altamonte Springs had become a thriving community. In 1902,Altamonte Springs became part of Florida's newly created statehood. At this time, it was one of only a few communities in Florida that didnt already have substantial African American populations. Over the years, Altamonte Springs has undergone many transformations: from an agricultural town to an important financial center during the late 19th century; to a vibrant cultural destination during the 20th century; and finally, back into an agricultural town again during recent decades.
