The name "Altamonte" comes from Spanish meaning "place of orange trees." In 1885 the Altamonte Springs post office was established and remained in operation until it discontinued operations in 1978. The first white person to live in what is now Altamonte Springs was José María Ortiz who settled in 1835 on an island near present-day Altamont Creek. Ortiz's heirs sold their interest to Captain George Gilbert in 1849 and Gilbert developed this land into one of Duval County's most important commercial areas with shipyards, cotton plantations and other businesses. In 1865 Augustus Cook purchased some land east of the creek and built his home called Cooks' Landing which served as a community center for many years until it burned down in 1908. In 1886 two brothers named James Fenton bought 2,000 acres (8 km²) northeast of present-day Altamont Springs from Captain Gilbert for $10 per acre ($2 million adjusted dollars). This tract became known as "Fenton Park". The first house on the property was erected by Mr. Fenton sometime before 1888 and soon afterwards he began to develop it into a large citrus grove that included trees growing up to 25 feet (7 m) tall. By 1907 there were more than 100 fruit trees grown here under contract by Jardine & Hinton Incorporated with 1 million pounds (454 kg) of fruit produced that year alone!
