On December 12th of that year, Altamonte Springs fought off a proposed annexation by Lakeland which would have put it within reach of Tallahassee proper; however,Lakeland ultimately withdrew its offer due to budget constraints. In 1990s construction began on what would become one of Walt Disney World's most famous attractions - Epcot's "Maelstrom" water ride - which opened successfully on May 15th that same year after years of preparation and testing. At over $1 billion dollars it is considered one of Walt Disney World's largest tourist attractions ever built (and stillOperates).
