Altamonte Springs is a city located in the southeastern corner of Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of Palm Beach County. Altamonte Springs has a humid subtropical climate with very hot summers and mild winters, much like many other areas in the area. The first permanent settler in what is now Altamonte Springs was Captain John Smith who explored the area in 1786 during his trip from Pensacola to St. Augustine. He named the place "Altamont" after his home town in England. The name stuck and today's city was founded on April 12, 1891 by J.P Carter as "Altamonte". In 1902, developer Waddell Coolidge donated land for a municipal park that would include an arena and eventually a baseball field where the Altamonte Springs Falcons played from 1903-1976 before moving to Tampa Bay for their last season in 1976. In 1912, another developer donated land for what is now Clocktower Park which included tennis courts, facilities for boys and girls water polo, dog runs and later became known as Altamonte Hills Cemetery because it housed most of Palm Beach County's poor residents until they were moved to developments such as Sunrise Gardens or Jupiter Park whenvenants were made between homeowners and developers providing cemetery space on their properties without having to pay taxes on it! In 1916 construction began on what would become North Memorial Drive which connected downtown Orlando with Lake Worth Boulevard making it one of only two streets in Orange County still open at grade level when development began along its length! In 1922 City Manager Averill Grote created Department of Recreation & Parks which led to creation of Community Services Department (CSSD) responsible for street cleaning, right-of-way acquisition/maintenance/paved surfaces etc., which continues today as Orlando trash collection! Today's Altamonte Springs skyline can be seen looking south down North Memorial Drive towards Downtown Orlando features highrise housing developments such as Sunrise Gardens while orange groves continue to provide essential shade on days when temperatures get over 100 degrees F!
The Altamonte Springs, Florida community was founded in 1892 by the brothers Elias and John Altamonte. They started a merchant marine business on Bulls Bayou. The Altamonte Springs post office was established in 1893, and the first store opened in 1895. The population grew rapidly during the early 20th century, and by 1930 there were over 100 businesses in the community. During World War II, Altamonte Springs became a major center of production for aircraft parts. In 1948, the town annexed part of Lake Butler to form a new borough named after John Fenton, Jr., who had donated land to the town.
