Altamonte Springs, Florida is a city located in central Florida. The population was 30,811 as of the 2010 census. The Altamonte Springs metropolitan area has a population of over 60,000 people and includes the cities of Orlando and Daytona Beach. The springs are located about 25 miles northeast of downtown Orlando on Interstate 441. The first Europeans to visit what is now Altamonte Springs were Juan Ponce de León and his men on their exploration of North America in 1493-94. They named the area Buena Vista after one of their previous encounters with Indians along that portion of theFlorida Peninsula. It wasn't until 1675 when Spanish missionaries founded a mission here at Saint Augustine Castle called La Pena Convento which remains an active religious center to this day. In 1821, General James Kenedy established Fort Moultrie near present-day Altamonte Springs for American forces during the Seminole Wars against Native Americans. In 1824, Ulysses S Grant landed at Moultrie for similar reasons and later moved his headquarters to here from Ft Brooke outside Tampa Bay in 1825-26 during the Seminole War against Pedro Menéndez de Avilés y Castro who had unsuccessfully attempted to retake Cuba from Spain under US auspices. "Avenue Of Fine Arts," designed by architect Edward Jephcott in 1915 soon became known across America as "the White House Avenue." Today it's home to several large businesses including Macy's Department Store, Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears), Brookfield Place Mall, Home Depot Inc., Lowe's Logistics Company (L&H), Belk Cosmetics Inc., Tiffany & Co., Samsung Electronics Co., Carnival Cruise Lines LLC, UPS Ground Transportation Inc., among others In 1916 Jacksonville native Edward Jephcott designed what is affectionately called "theWhite House Avenue" - today one of Orlando’s most popular tourist areas with its plethora of art galleries, restaurants and nightlife – just east of downtown Orlando on I-441 between Lake Street/SR 417 and Park Boulevard/SR 407 . After World War II Oak Lawn Community Church began serving as both an overflow church for military families stationed nearby at Camp Williamsburg (now Fort Myers) and also providing basic living services such as food delivery to servicemen’s wives while they were away on duty; eventually becoming self-sufficient enough that Ladies Auxiliary No 1 was formed in 1945! When Orange County was created in 1907 there was much discussion over where it would be located - some proposed Orange City while other residents wanted Altamonte Springs because it had more than two thousand acres available then any other community within county boundaries (). The population of Altamonte Springs grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location at the crossroads of two major railroad lines and its proximity to Miami Beach. Businesses such as Sears, Roebuck and Company, Kmart, JCPenney and Disney World located in downtown Orlando increased competition for jobs in Altamonte Springs. New shopping centers were built in the area during this time including the Northshore Shopping Center (1929), Southshore Shopping Center (1933) and Westshore Shopping Center (1945). During World War II,Altamonte Springs played a significant role in providing food for military personnel stationed within or nearby Orange County. Work began on building industries such as aircraft manufacturing at Sanford Air Force Base in 1942 and laterSpecified Manufacturing Area No. 2 was established at Clearwater Naval Shipyard in 1945; both plants produced munitions for America's war effort. But growth slowed after the war; nevertheless, Altamonte Springs continued to grow through the 1970s thanks to new development around Lake Nona Golf Course, which attracted more people to live near town center than ever before. More recently, redevelopment has occurred along I-4A throughout central orange County focusing on student housing developments such as The Villages School District Campus development project that began construction in early 2016; this will add nearly 400 residences near University Avenue between US 1/SR 712 and SR 571 near Interstate 4A exits 95B & 96B within walking distance of DowntownAltamonte Springs
