In 1990, Altamonte Springs annexed parts of unincorporated Orange County and its population grew to over 50,000. In 2000, it annexed part of Lake Worth County and its population grew to over 100,000. Since 2002, it has also annexationd portions of Hardee's County including College Park and Jupiter Beach - increasing its population to more than 150,000 residents today. Today's economy revolves around manufacturing: cattle farming is still an important component; however business now includes resorts such as Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort; education; healthcare services; living spaces for tourists; housing developments for retirees/immigrants ;and professional sports teams (the Orlando Magic and Tampa Bay Buccaneers). In addition there are large numbers self-employed individuals who do not identify with any particular economic sector or industry but rely on their own subsistence income from agriculture or other businesses in which they have some involvement

In 1919, the city became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor and City Council form of government. On May 4, 1984, the City of Altamonte Springs annexed the villages of Biscayne Bay and Coral Gables to its boundaries; this made Altamonte Springs one of only two cities in South Florida that are annexation-free (the other being Lighthouse Point). In 2000, Hurricane Mitch destroyed much of Fort Lauderdale's central business district including parts ofAltamonte Springs where Mitch caused extensive damage including $2 million worth of property loss just withinAltamonte Spring's limits alone
