By 1700 BC, the task of finding a route between Asia and America had become a problem for the British Isles because they could not find a way to get their goods to market without passing through China. A group of Englishmen founded Jamestown in 1607 after hearing about the riches waiting in America. After many years of exploration, they discovered an area that would make possible their quest for independence from Great Britain- the Potomac River Valley. The town was founded on October 14th, 1776 by Captains Nathaniel Calvert and John Forbes during the American Revolutionary War. In 1792, George Washington became President of The United States of America and began his term of office with great promise for AMERICA. However, within a few short months he was impeached along with other members of Congress due to accusations that they were involved in corrupt practices on Capitol Hill- charges that were later proven false. In 1801, Washington was again elected President but this time he did not seek re-election because only two terms were allowed per president at that time (the Twenty Fifth Amendment granted voting rights to citizens aged 25 or older). In 1804 he resigned from his position due to poor health and returned home to Mount Vernon where he died 10 years later on February 16th, 1809 at age 78 years old.
