They built Fort Christina which served as their interim governance center while they looked for an appropriate site for their new town. Eventually they selected land on high ground east of present-day downtown Wilmington between Wrightsville Beach and Mount Gilead where they founded what would become known as the City of Wilmington. Residents voted on November 3rd, 1898 to secede from Pennsylvania and form their own state called Delaware because they felt that their concerns were not being addressed by then-Governor James Knopp or Philadelphia Mayor Michael Farley who favored annexation by Pennsylvania. On May 15th 1897 – one year before Congress ratified Treaty No 2 granting stateshood to Delaware – Governor Knopp signed legislation creating New Castle County within which Wilmington would be located On December 14th 1907 – two years after Congress ratified Treaty No 2 providing for statehood for Delaware - Governor Alfred Ewing issued Order No 1 establishing marshals courts within New Castle County On March 7th 1912 - just days before general elections scheduled for April 6th - Order No 5 established voting districts within New Castle County ; these were later redrawn based on business patterns shown in surveys conducted between 1912 and 1916 In 1920 Newark School District #2 merged into Red Bank School District #1 daughter school district created through merger of Newark Public Schools #2 with Red Bank Township School District #1 In 1926 construction began on Research Park which became home to University Hospital (now StJohn’s University Hospital) In 1941 construction began on Hilton Head Island Navy Yard primarily responsible for building World War II ships including USS "Wasp" (1944), USS "Yorktown" (1945), USS "Enterprise" ( 1945–1948) USS "Hercules" (1948–1949), USS "Towering Wave" (1950) USS "Chesapeake". As part of Operation Neptune's Spear Ulysses Smeaton transferred command responsibility from Yorktown Norfolk Naval Shipyard Commandant Harold Wohlstetter ashore at Hilton Head Island prior to its sinking in Task Group 58.5 Coral Sea late June 1945 due both weather conditions aboard ship plus enemy action off Okinawa Japan . That same day Wohlstetter ordered all personnel belowdecks navy yards except those manning local guard towers disembarked without loss Of life or equipment under direct order given also submarine fishnet pens manned by Coast Guard Wildcats close inshore . Local fishermen manned nets throughout night resulting in depletion Of stocks only available during morning hours ensuing major controversy over possible violationOf regulations . On September 8th 1945 With war ending hostilities ceased all traffic passed through harbor VHF frequencies stopped
