The Newark, Delaware shooting incident of December 14, 1977 involved the death of two people and injury to nine others when a gunman opened fire on a group of people attending a Christmas party at the Fairmont State Resort Hotel. The shooter was identified as 24-year-old John Sinclair, who had recently been discharged from the United States Marine Corps and had recently moved to Newark. John Sinclair's initial intent was not murder but rather to scare away holiday guests. He shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and her new husband before turning his attention to the other guests. After being fired upon by several guests, Sinclair barricaded himself in an elevator with some hostages, using one gun for self-defense while remaining unarmed. A hostage negotiator negotiated with Sinclair until he surrendered after approximately 15 minutes of standoff situation. Nine people were injured in the shooting including five children aged 5 to 12 years old who were playing outside when it happened. Sinclair was eventually apprehended and charged with two counts of first degree murder (the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend), three counts of attempted manslaughter (shootings at six other people), nine counts of possession of a firearm by an unlawful user (possession without license or registration), one count each of recklessly endangering another person and obstruction thereof, four counts possession or useof ammunition by someone convicted in any state court for a felony crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year, and three counts destruction or impairment Of evidence (losing video recordings). On December 17, 1977 he was found guilty on all charges except obstruction which resulted in only 9 months transportation time instead 2 years federal prison time; however this sentence did not come into effect because he had already been released from incarceration 3 months earlier on parole! In total John Sinclair received 46 months probation plus 3 years period parole!

The first Europeans to visit Newark were French traders and missionaries in 1681–82 led by Pierre de Montresor. In 1755, when George Washington was appointed commander-in-chief of Continental forces in America, he assigned his brother Nathanael Greene to take over management of the military posts in New Jersey and Delaware as commander-in-chief's aide-de-camp. In 1756, General James Kieft laid out a plan for developing Newark into an important seaport with warehouses and homes for merchants. The town became known as Kieft's Town because it was through his efforts that development began there. In 1846 – two years after Delaware became a state – Newark voters approved an ordinance designating May Day as American Independence Day; this event remains its official holiday today. On July 4th 1849, following American independence from Great Britain, Commodore John Denny burned all but one mile (1 km) of lowland along the Delaware River waterfront during celebrations that marked Rutgers University's first graduation from college (it graduated six students). From this point forward until 1862 when construction began on Fairmount Mall—the original center for shopping and local government—Newark remained little more than an agricultural outpost with only about 60 residents living in scattered homes scattered along Race Street between Swede Avenue and Ferry Street West before construction started on what would become downtown commenced with plans to have 5000 residents within 10 years By 1870 Wilmington had surpassed Newark in population size becoming second only toPhiladelphiadespite having no harbor or seaport
Newark was chartered as a port town in 1674. By 1795, the population had grown to over 50,000 and it became an important commercial center. In 1814, Newark was burned by British troops during the War of 1812. The town recovered quickly and by 1821, it had become the second-largest city in Delaware after Dover. Newark enjoyed a period of prosperity from the 1850s through the 1880s and again into the 1920s. However, economic decline followed World War II and Newark reached its lowest level of population during the 1960s. Since then, Newark has experienced growth and progressivism as its mayor has led efforts to improve infrastructure and create new businesses.
