Newark, Delaware is an unincorporated community in Kent County, Delaware, United States. The population was 3,545 at the 2010 census. Newark was first settled in 1724 by the French and Indian Expedition under General Edward Braddock. The area now comprising Newark was part of the Spanish colony of Puerto Rico until 1898 when it became part of the United States following its purchase from Spain. In 1903, Newark School District No. 2 merged with Dover School District to form a larger district. The name "Newark" originated from Nicholas de Villecourt's 1609 plan for a trading post on what is now Rodney Road between Newark Bay and New Castle Harbour. The town had a population of 10 people in 1802 but grew rapidly after that due to its location on the Delaware River just upstream from Philadelphia and its access to goods available only over land crossings at Morristown or Trenton NJ. In 1825, John Nicholson (the founder of Nicholson's Ferry) donated land east of present-day Newark for two churches: First Presbyterian and Second Presbyterian Church which were both built in 1827 on this site. At this time there were no paved roads or schools within the town limits; everyone either walked or took horseback rides to attend services at these two churches which were located about halfway between downtown and their respective precincts within the town limits. In 1838, Third Presbyterian Church also built a large addition west of present-day Newark High School on what is now Old Bridge Road; this church served as both an Episcopal parish as well as a religious education center for local children who could not otherwise attend school because their parents could not afford it/it was too dangerous outside of urban areas).
