Middletown is a town located in the Delaware Valley in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Middletown is one of two townships in Delaware County, and it forms the eastern border of Susquehanna Township to the north. Middletown was first established by European colonists as a small post on the banks of the Susquehanna River between 1738 and 1739. In 1741, Middletown became an incorporated borough thanks to support from local landowners and citizens who desired stronger government control over their community. One important development during its early years was construction of a canal that connected tributaries of the Susquehanna River near present-day Allentown with Philadelphia via Middletown's dockside location. The canal allowed for increased trade and commerce within Middletown while also providing transportation access for goods necessary for growing colonial settlements along both sides of the river. The growth and success of MiddletOWN led to incorporation as a township on December 6, 1831 by order of Governor George MS Woodbury following ratification by voters in a referendum held just days prior. Incorporation marked an important milestone in both town's history as well as its relationship to neighboring communities such as Allentown and Reading (both now part of Pennsylvania). With this new status, residents were able to vote on ordinances and levy taxes which helped support infrastructure needs such as schools, churches, courts, etc.. During World War II, many members from nearby Allentown enlisted into service in Delaware County cavalry units located throughout western Pennsylvania; some served until they were discharged or reached retirement age at which point they returned home to live again in their original municipalities; however most veterans lived through World War II here within MiddletsOWN before moving on into other occupations or returning back to their old hometowns after hostilities had ended. Today’s economy depends heavily upon healthcare services provided by several larger employers including HCA Southern Company (formerly known as Penn Health), PCL group Inc., Aetna Corporation/Peoples Care Health Plan/Methodist Church Health System (now Unitedhealthcare) - all founded or relocated here during recent decades - University Park Hospital & Medical Center (founded 1876), Stonington Hills Regional Hospital (founded 1942) - one half mile east off I-95 - Walgreens Pharmacy & Drug Store - numerous retail stores plus restaurants including Dunkin' Donuts & Subway sandwich shops - various day cares and school districts including Kittridge Day School District #1 & Kittridge Middle School District #2 are among its largest employers providing critical jobs downtown while also hosting several thousand residential units across SE PA bordering New York City proper et al...Middlesex Twp., Pa., Marilla Twp., West Chesterfield Twp., Easton Township
