Middletown is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. The population was 5,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first scopes were built in Middletown during the early 18th century. In 1799, a group of Europeans who had traveled through central and eastern Delaware saw some unusual objects on the river banks and decided to build a telescope to study them. The first scopes were made out of metal and glass, but over time they became more sophisticated and able to see farther than any other type of telescope at that time. Today, you can find scopes all over America, including in Middletown where they are still used for research and observation.

Middletown, Delaware is a town located in Kent County, Delaware, United States. The population was 5,921 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington–DE-Middletown, DE Combined Statistical Area. Middletown is bordered by New Castle to the south and east, Lewes to the north and west, and Townsend to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit Middletown were Dutch settlers in 1638 who named it "Het Vecht" (the sea). In 1727 Englishman John Smyth landed on an island near present day Middletown with his family and began trading with the Indians. Soon after he built a small cabin on what is now Main Street. Smyth's descendants continued trading until 1814 when they left for good because of British occupation of America during the War of 1812. In 1768 Englishman Joseph Hays settled on land adjoining Smyth's property and called it "New Castle." He built a small house there which served as his home until he sold it in 1800 to James Aiken who renamed it "New Castle." In 1803 Hays' son Samuel bought back his father's interest in New Castle and continued running it as a toll road until 1840 when he sold it to Major General George Washington Parke Custis for $10 per acre. Custis changed its name again in 1846 to Middletown after General James Ketchum's residence there while visiting England. After Custis' death in 1850 Middletown reverted back to New Castle but was again renamed in 1865 as Middletown after William Cessna Earlewayne III become its first mayor. It was not until 1899 that two businesses joined forces - The Citizens Bank & Trust Company (now First National Community Bank) founded by Jno Waddell Daugherty became a co-operative bank that same year followed by The Masonic Temple erected soon thereafter on what is now Market Street cornering State Street - both buildings remain extant today operatively unchanged despite being nearly seventy years old! On July 1st 1959 Delaware became one state when Congress passed An Act entitled “An Act To Reorganize Government Of The United States” becoming effective July 1st 1959 – thus giving new impetus for growth throughout our great state! One such impetus came from Newark Township officials seeking annexation into their larger municipality; this process took place over several months beginning on June 15th 1960 thru September 9th 1960 resulting ultimately in Newark Township joining Dover Township & portions of West Chester Borough forming today’s Municipality of Dover! This event also created many opportunities for business development within our township including: establishment/establishment of: four restaurants/bars; construction/operation of six garages/repair shops; opening of two high school gyms; purchase/installation of twenty-four streetlights; installation/ erection of three water towers... etc etc etc!!! All told we enjoyed developing some amazing new businesses along with numerous job postings resultant from this merger!!! This paved the way for photography as we know it today and allowed scientists such as Darwin to study under magnification animals like plants and diseases without having them killed or disturbed by others. In 1825, Dutchman Cornelius Agassiz constructed the world’s first Refractive Mirror Telescope which was able To image objects up to 100 meters away! By 1850, all of these advances had ledscopic observation into an area where it now enjoys widespread popularity across the globe!

Middletown was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Campbell and his family. The first post office in Middletown was established in 1801. The town's name comes from "Middle Township" which lay to the east of the original town site. Middletown grew rapidly after it became one of the few areas in Delaware open to white settlement outside of Wilmington and Dover. In 1827, an act of Congress designated Middletown as the seat of Kent County. The growth of Middletown led to its incorporation as a city on November 3, 1881. On December 5, 1907, an act passed by Congress designated Middletown as capital of new Kent County created by that act. After years of development and growth, Kenedyville annexed most of what is now eastern section ( west side) of Middletown on April 15, 1914; while remaining portions including downtown were annexed on October 1st 1915- becoming what is now western section (east side). On July 11th 1946 through legislation approved by both houses both chambers Of The Delaware General Assembly called for consolidation with Newark City inside New Castle County effective July 1st 1947 creating a single government entity with jurisdiction over all citizens within its borders without regard to race or color however this never took place due to financial issues between Newark City and Kent County resulting in their separation two days later becoming Newark Liberty International Airport which still retains its title as "the home airport for all Delmarva Islanders".
