In 1832-33, Andrew Butler started construction on what would become known as Butler's Hill which became one of the most important landmarks in Middletown – now called Butler's Hill Park. The hill was home to many businesses including Butlers Furniture store from 1835 until its closing around 1957; also located on Butler's Hill were several residences building such as Mrs. Thomas White House which still stands today and is one of only two remaining examples of period style architecture in Delaware County; also located on Butler's Hill was Social Hall which served as the local daycare center until it closed around 1990; and lastly located on Butler's Hill was Orphanage No 2 which housed children who had been orphaned or lost their families during the American Civil War while their parents fought for independence from Great Britain). In 1856-57 Dionisius Biddle built Biddle's Grove Cemetery which later became known as Delmarva Lutheran Church following his death in 1860s At that time there were over 20 religious denominations represented at Biddle’s Grove Cemetery! From 1863 through 1865 Cornelius Hendrickson ran a sawmill on Mill Creek near present day First Congregational Church where he also built a gristmill that still operates today - this mill helped power early electricity generation efforts throughout southeastern Delaware! On July 4th 1870 Frederick Wirth erected Wirth’s Mansion overlooking then current site Of Main Street & Franklin Avenue within current boundaries Of Town limits form what are now Bruce Elementary School Grounds And ultimately remains One Of Most Loved Historic properties Within Today’s Community! After years long anticipation by much anticipation finally starting construction On October 3rd 1870 under new Management by Jno Vaught Completed Building Which Still Exists As A residential Home/Apartments Right Next Door To CurrentBruce Elementary Schoollot 2nd Floor Loft With Gabled roof & Many Original Architectural features!!

The population was 561 at the 2010 census. The history of Middletown began with the founding of the English colony of Delaware in 1702 by Captain John Smith and his party. The town was located on the Christina River, approximately south of present-day Middletown. A post office was established at Middletown in 1790, and remained open until 1918. In 1814, Colonel Richard Hooker assaulted Native Americans living near what is now known as Bridgeville; after a short battle Hooker retreated to Middletown with his forces. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell passed through Delaware on his way to Maryland and encountered General Ulysses S. Grant's army at Lewes Junction outside Wilmington. After a skirmish that resulted in no casualties on either side, both armies converged on Lewes Junction where Ewell's force attacked Grant's rear guard while Grant withdrew to Wilmington without further engagement. As part of its celebrations marking 350 years since Jamestown Settlement (1607), Delaware State Highway 4A (MD 455) was designated in honor of MiddletOWN’s Founding Father George Washington during a dedication ceremony held at Swen Hens Park on July 10th 2014
