On December 25, 1812, during the War of 1812, General Anthony Wayne's army invaded and burned down Drury Fenton's house as part of its campaign against Native American raids nearpresent day Portsmouth Township. A local man by the name of John Ladd donated land east of Main Street which became known as Ladd's Garden after him. This area would become one of MiddletOWN's most important commercial areas with stores such as Sears & Roebuck opening their doors there in 1902 and Mercers opening until 1978. In 1896 there was an election held for president of Delaware County which resulted in George Washington Smith being elected with over 97% of the vote becomingGovt Agent (later renamed Secretary) for DEPartment OF Indian Affairs Reserve Lands at Oneonta Creek where he resided until his death on July 29th 1907 having served continuously since then... After Mr. Smith's death Mrs.. Gertrude Atherton took over administration but resigned due to ill health on October 1st 1907 after serving only six months... On November 10th 1907 Jno....Draper succeeded Mrs....Atherton as Gov't Agent and continued operations until his death August 11th 1909... On January 6th 1910 Wm......Draper Successor took office under new management
