Middletown, Delaware is home to the oldest continuously inhabited town in the United States. The community was founded in 1717 by John Wayland and his wife Susannah Mellon. In 1887, Middletown became a city and has since grown to become an internationally known center for technology and innovation. Today, Middletown is known for its thriving startup scene, popular nightlife, and world-renowned educational institutions. It is also home to one of America’s largest technology companies, Intel Corporation. The town has been a powerhouse in technological innovation over the past several decades and its residents have helped make Middletown a global center for technology development. Middletown’s history can be traced back to early colonial times when settlers arrived in what is now Delaware County. John Wayland was one of the first Europeans to settle in what is now Middletown Township. He built a cabin on the edge of present-day Wayland Park and named it after his father-in-law, Sir George Washington. Wayland Township was established on November 3, 1717, according to local records. The township quickly became an important player in regional trade due to its location at the junction of two major routes connecting Philadelphia with New York City and Liverpool through Delaware County. By 1800,Wayland Township had five families living within its borders; by 1820 there were twelve families residing within it.* In 1887, Middletown became a city under Pennsylvania law following the merger of three separate cities – Newark (Newarkshire), Easton (Elmira), and Hazleton (Hazleton). Today, Middletown is a small, unincorporated community located within Delaware County. Middletown is located at 33°29′5″N 76°36′0″W (33.9667 N76.14167 W). It has a total area of , making it smaller than most American towns of its size. The population of Middletown was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The town is named for Colonel John Thompson, who founded it in 1785 after moving from nearby Milford Heights. At that time, Milford Heights lay just outside of present-day Delaware County on the southern edge of Pennsylvania; when General George Washington moved his headquarters to nearby Georgetown during the Revolutionary War to avoid being under British occupation, he ordered Thompson to move his business and other properties eastward into Delaware County so they could be immune from attack should war break out between America and Great Britain. Middletown rapidly grew as an important transportation hub during the Revolutionary War because both military supplies and munitions were transported through its streets onto battlefields throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania; accordingly, Colonel John Thompson's name came to be associated with this citywide trade center which thrived until around 1815 due largely to its location close to key supply points on two vital routes linking Philadelphia with Yorktown Peninsula where American forces had won decisive victory over British troops
