The racial makeup of Middletown Township was 99% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 1% from two or more races. Middletown was founded in 1681 by Thomas Middletown and his wife Judith. The town was named for the Delaware River which ran through it. The first white settlers arrived in 1715, and soon after began to build a small community on the east bank of the river. In 1768, the town was renamed for George Washington, who had served as President of the United States at that time.
