Middletown is a small town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Middletown–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Middletown was founded in 1796 by Nicholas-Jacques de la Salle and his family as a trading post on the lower Delaware River. The name "Middletown" derived from its location near the mouth of the Monongahela River, which gave it access to goods transported downriver by boat. The first permanent settler in Middletown was Nicholas-Jacques's son, Pierre de La Salle, who built a residence on what is now Main Street in 1799. He also donated land for a public square and schoolhouse. In 1814, La Salle's grandson Jean Baptiste La Salle sold him all of his property except for about . He then settled around what are now Elmwood and Cedar Streets and built a home there which he called "the Palais". In 1821, John A. Dickson moved to Middletown from Wilkesbarre Township and began grocery store operations on Elmwood Avenue. Dickson became one of Middletown's most prominent citizens and served as mayor from 1895 to 1897 and 1907 to 1911. He also played an important role in developing the town into an agricultural center with processing plants for fruits, vegetables, grains and other products that reached markets throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey; however, after World War II most industry left MiddletOWN behind as technology advanced. In 1984 John A.'s grandson Donny died suddenly leaving behind an estate valued at over $1 million dollars today - making MiddletOWN one of the wealthiest communities in Delaware County! As recently as 2000-2001 there were only 10 residents living in MiddletOWN & only 2 working full time! Today we have over 100 residents living here full time or more & we're still growing! We have many businesses coming back such as: KFC (now Papa John’s), Subway (now Domino’s Pizza), Walmart (now Sam’s Club), Applebees (formerly Tiger Woods golf club). Our economy has been thriving thanks to our strong community foundation programs like: grants for arts & crafts projects/ exhibitions/fundraisers etc., summer jobs program for local students thru DEEZYBIZ Youth Development Authority-Lackawanna Intermediate Unit #564A9B9D6A4F… We also have a great committee system going on here that helps us stay organized & keep things moving forward...
