Middletown is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. The population was 6,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington–New Castle–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of Middletown may derive from Middle Dutch "midden" meaning both end and middle (of an estate), given its location on the Delaware River between New Castle and Wilmington. The first people to live in what is now Middletown were natives of the area around New York City. They came overland as traders and missionaries during the early colonial period and began to settle in what is now Middletown about 1715. By 1725 they had erected a small Fort George on an artificial peninsula formed by dredging a river bed which they named after their home city, Amsterdam. In 1764, Colonel John Nicholas built a new fort at present-day Middletown known as North Fort Nicholas after his father-in-law, Sir Thomas Westfall of London. During the Revolutionary War, many soldiers who served in America were interned at Princeton University where General George Washington was educated until he left for America in 1775 to lead the Continental Army against King George III's forces. When he arrived back in America two days before Britain declared war on America on April 14th (the day before Lexington & Concord was burned), he found that Princeton students had already taken arms against their British captors! Middletown played an important role during the Revolution; it became home to General John Sullivan's Brigade and several other units which fought with distinction throughout that critical campaign including Major General Nathanael Greene's Division which attacked Long Island on September 26th (four days before Yorktown). On November 9th (the day after Cornwallis surrendered) while fighting near Charlottesville Heights under heavy fire from British forces Lieutenant Colonel Edward Braddock led his brigade into action across open ground leading up to Stony Point when order suddenly changed and he ordered his brigade instead into line behind cover under heavy artillery support! That attack led to one of history's most dramatic engagements – one Minute After Dawn resulting in more than three thousand casualties for American Patriots along with five hundred losses for British Empire troops! This victory also secured American control over much of north-central Virginia resulting in Benjamin Franklin becoming President pro tempore of the United States Senate!
