This new settlement quickly grew into a thriving community with many businesses: trader shops (including one which still stands today), a schoolhouse/barn (later replaced by an opera house), churches (built between 1796-1800), homes for various families who had married into nearby German or Dutch families (the first such intermarriage being celebrated at Dover Village when Anna Hesser married Nicholas Knyphausen there on July 4th 1800), residences for army officers stationed along the riverbank during wartime (most notably General David Dixon's quarters at Fort George Washington) and more! Today's downtown business district around Church Street began life as part of this earlier period with stores such as Goudreau & Sons Hardware Store opening up shop here in 1897 followed by Hickey's Department Store just east of present day Broadway Avenue in 1899; both were later joined by three other store buildings including Jardine Bros.'s Bakery which opened its doors here in 1916 becoming one of only five brick buildings remaining after World War II within downtown boundaries; smaller businesses continued to open up throughout these years but it wasn't until 1978 that major development really started to take hold with construction of Macdonald-Laurier Stadium across Broadwalk from Jardine Bros.'s Bakery which soon became home to local high school sports teams as well as concerts and other events; growth continued unabated through the 1990s until2001 when two hurricanes hit America causing extensive damage both inside and outside downtown including demolition/ reconstruction of many older structures; however Restoration Grant money arrived soon afterward which has seen much redevelopment taking place Downtown again culminatinginpresentdaydowntown boundaries with another large shopping center located just east off I-94 adjacent to Interstate 95
