Dover is the smallest of the five boroughs in Delaware County and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. It lies on the Susquehanna River, about 26 miles (41 km) east-northeast of Philadelphia and 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Camden. Dover was first settled by English colonists in 1682 as an agricultural community on land that now includes portions of Dover Township, Stanton Township, Easton Township and Gloucester Township. The settlement became a port for goods arriving from Maryland and other parts ofPennsylvania via the Susquehanna River. In 1784, George Washington named it after his father-in-law Admiral Sir John Danforth who had helped British forces during America's war against France. The town grew rapidly during its early years as a result of shipping and fishing activity on the river; however, it declined after 1815 when transportation improved to such an extent that shipping ceased to be an important factor in local development. During World War II, Dover was one of two U.S.-occupied towns in Delaware County; it remained so until 1945 when it reverted back to Pennsylvania control following the war's end. The town has experienced some rapid growth since then—although much remains slow-going due to lack of investment and infrastructure development—and today has a population OF 2,569 according to the 2010 Census estimate The name "Dover" appears to have been derived from Old English "dóorf", meaning "fortress". The fortifications around present day Dover were built by Dutch colonists in 1682 under orders from General John Forbes during their effort to keep British forces out of what would become Pennsylvania Colony. From 1784 until 1787, Commodore James Cook sailed upstream along both sides ofthe Susquehanna River towards Fort Christina with instructions to establish British trade posts at both points – but he never arrived at either site because he was met by French forces en route which prevented him from reaching his destination! Eventually these fortifications were abandoned and used only intermittently as houseboats moored between them before they were finally removed completely in 1812 when Fort Cumberland was constructed just south ofpresent day Wilmington on opposite banksofthe river!
