The first gun target in Dover was affixed to the courthouse in 1783. The second was a fortification and arsenal outside of town in 1794. In 1812, a set of cannons and an ammunition depot were installed at Fort George on the Delaware River. In 1832, Dover became part of the United States following the signing of the Treaty of Paris which ended the war between America and Great Britain. The city's first mayor was John Dickinson and its first clerk was Samuel Beecher. In 1824, Dover became a town when it combined with neighboring blocks of Washington Township to form Kent County. The county courthouse moved from Newark to Dover in 1876. In 1970, Dover merged with other townships to become Incorporated Village of Dover which had an estimated population of 9,000 residents as of 2009. The original area that would become Dover was forested and hilly because it serviced areas along the Susquehanna River north of Philadelphia before European settlement began in this region. By 1795, land development around present day downtown started with manufacture of bricks for Bridgeport’s new brickworks established by Nicholas Biddle near what is now Market Street and Front Street (now called State Street). That same year saw incorporation of Washington Township into Kent County under ./John Dickinson/, who named it after George Washington as part of efforts to consolidate British possessions westward across America during the revolutionary period./ /In 1796/ two years after incorporation (and despite objections from some within his own township), Dickinsonsigned legislation creating Sussex County west of Philadelphia based on then-current boundaries between Pennsylvania and Delaware/. As one result, much valuable property along the Susquehanna Valley were Granted away to create Sussex County – including all or portions of both Delaware townships that would later form Dover.– /For many years prior to 1800 nearly every family in our village resided on Indian Creek Road., where we still gather eggs today!/ The first permanent settler in what would become Dover Township arrived just over two decades later when James Deasy built his home “At Home” off what is now South Main Street or High Street – originally known as de Anza Place (the grantee’s name for their farmstead.) Deasy immediately began trading goods with local Native Americans who lived adjacent through hunting and fishing trips they made yearly upstream from their villages on Catoctin Creek.. He also opened up trade with local farmers inland via canals dug through thick forests miles away across sections now submerged beneath river levels.– /James Deasy occupied At Home until he died about 1800./ After James Deasey’s death his wife Bathsheba continued living there until she too passed away circa 1830; however her son Amos took over running house until 1840 when he sold house & lot back to original grantees (& descendants continue using property name till present day)./ From humble beginnings At Home quickly grew into one OF THE FIRST BUSINESSES IN DOWNTOWN DERMOND!– By 1800 most families here resided either ON INDIAN CREEK ROAD OR ON VALLEY HILLS A MILES WEST OF OUR FOUNDATION!../ During this time commercial activity flourished due largely to several factorssuch as easy access TO WATER FOR FARMING & BUYING GOODS FROM FAR AWAY& ample transportation available via ferry boats TO AND FROM PAULUSE . Ocean Shipping Company landed here early (& did business ashore) loading cargoes onto large sailing ships bound for points faraway primarily New York City but also Liverpool (#BigBen), Baltimore & Philadelphia.# /We enjoyed harvesting fruit from trees right outside our door watching boatloads Of visitors dock And leave – often bringing huge baskets Of goodies!/ We especially enjoyed raiding neighbor's gardens picking ripe fruits while they gardened….. lots happened during those early days…. major events included: Settling US Claim #1 east side OF THE RIVER opposite Old Fort Leesburgh(present day Lewes) IN 1797; Constructionof First Permanentschoolhouse 2nd floor EAST OF SCHOOLHOUSE 3rd Floor NEWPORT COLLINS Charter School MAY 1998;; Birth Of Our Most Famous Citizen JOHNDickinson.. 2nd Generation: John Dickinson Jr., Samuel Beecher 1st Generation: John Dickinson Sr., Christopher Moore
