Dover, Delaware is a town in Kent County, Delaware, United States. The population was 10,569 at the 2010 census. Dover's history goes back to 1638 when the Dutch colonists founded the town of New Castle on the river Delaware. In 1814, Dover became part of the United States and was named after General George Washington's home state of Virginia. The name "Dover" is also used for other places in Delaware: Dover Beach in Ocean County and Dover Air Force Base in Sussex County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Dover were Captain John Smith and his men who discovered land on July 2, 1638 while sailing downriver from Maryland along present-day U.S. Route 1 (now Interstate 95). They named their new settlement New Castle on the river because they had not seen any such place along that stretch of the coast before. At first only a few people lived here; most of them were French Huguenots who had come overland from France during King James I's war with Spain. With trade expanding rapidly between England and Holland through shipbuilding and shipping activity on both sides of the Atlantic, more people began to settle in this area as early as 1640 than had ever before been encountered within British North America. Soon there were numerous buildings standing throughout what would become known as Old Portsmouth Village - some dating back to 1598! By 1700 there must have been over 200 people living hereabouts! In 1777 Lord Dunmore issued an order compelling all Englishmen living within two miles of Philadelphia to leave for fear that they would side with their French brethren against Great Britain invaders quartered near Philadelphia! This event marks one of the earliest examples of mass deportation in American history... many thousands English Protestants did just that! For many years thereafter those refugees stayed behind after being ordered by Dunmore’s government to leave Pennsylvania carrying everything they possessed with them - including furniture, rugs and art treasures!! [This] demonstrated once again how little control Parliament had over its subjects...the very thing which made it so powerful politically must also have weakened its ability to enforce law & punish offenders !! Many settlers soon realized that farming wasn't going to be their only option based upon meager resources now available near Philadelphia offered by nature herself! So early farmers started raising hay and oats fields which are still visible today from Farmer Boyce Avenue eastward towards Wilmington across Rte 97A.... After a number of years these operations produced small crops/livestock but eventually larger quantities for market purposes supplemented by hogs Slaughtering took place off shore .... Fishing was another important factor especially migratory fishing trips upriver where commercial catches could be takenither outfishing or collecting shellfish off Point Roberts
