West Haven, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 393 at the 2010 census. West Haven is part of the New Britain–Hartford–New London metropolitan area. It is bordered by Eastman on the south and east, Fairfield on the north and west, and Danbury to the northwest. West Haven was first settled in 1638 when settlers from England founded a small farm named West Haverhill Colony in what is now Hartford Township. In 1784, Watertown became an incorporated town with its own government; West Haven remained unincorporated until 1868. The town's first school was built in 1792 on land donated by Amos Kendall. A courthouse and jail were added to the town site in 1803; both buildings are still standing today. In 1862, when Hartford changed its form from a township into a city, West Haven became part of that city's limits; it remains withinHartford City limits to this day. The population of West Haven increased rapidly during the 19th century thanks to waves of immigration: from Ireland (especially during times of famine), Germany (due to large-scale German colonization after World War I), Italy (because of railroad construction through central Connecticut), Russia (during czarist rule), Sweden (overseas immigrants who arrived following America's war with Mexico), as well as several hundred more naturalized citizens brought over through Assimilation Acts passed by Congress between 1881 and 1889).
