From 1831 through 1865, West Haven was governed by an appointed board of selectmen; from 1865 through 1983, it was governed by a township meeting system. On May 5, 1984, West Haven voters passed a referendum to become an unincorporated community under state law called "Township Consolidation Act".[2] West Haven has several cultural attractions including its landmark music venues – The Black Cat and Webster Hall – as well as its annual Shakespeare Festival which holds more than 100 plays throughout the year on stages around town.

Other famous buildings located in or around Westhaven include Stonington Hall (now part of Yale University), Elmwood Cemetery, Easton Hall (now part of Brown University), Brockman House (now part of Wellesley College), High Street Presbyterian Church (now part of Wesleyan University) and several others including Congregational Ladies’ School, First Congregational Church, Masonic Lodge No. 775 and Universalist Chapel #567B/. The town also has several important historical sites that are worth visiting such as Elmwood Cemetery where many prominent Americans are buried including George Washington Carver, abolitionist Anthony Burns, Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney; Stonington Hall where English leaders such as King Charles II were born; Brockman House where Revolutionary War General Samuel Adams lived; High Street Presbyterian Church which served as the meeting house for both Baptist churches in town before it became an Episcopal church when it moved to its current location; Congregational Ladies’ School where women learned to read during the American Revolution; First Congregational Church on High Street where abolitionists Isaac Parker Jr., John Woolridge and Frederick Douglass worshipped; Masonic Lodge No. 775 which served as a center for African American Freemasonry before it closed down in 1984; Universalist Chapel #567B/C/D which is now known as Bethel Unitarian UniversalistChurch TPUSA
