West Haven is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 53,854 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the New Britain–Hartford–New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. West Haven is home to Yale University and other notable institutions. The first Europeans to explore what is now West Haven were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his fleet of three vessels in 1524. The area that would become West Haven was first settled by Congregationalists in 1636 following the purchase of land from the Pequot Indian tribe. In 1764, a group of Quakers founded Mayflower Village on what is now Main Street in what would become West Haven Township. In 1814, West Haven became part of newly formed Hartford County when it was split off from Middlesex County. The village continued to be operate until 1845 when it merged with Easton Village to form NorthEastville Village which still exists today as part of NorthEastville Township. Prior to its incorporation into Hartford County, West Haven had its own court system and school district which operated until 1851 when all schools within the new county were consolidated into theHartford public school district under one superintendent. During World War II, parts of Southwick Manor located east of present-day Harley Avenue were used as a plant for Convair B-29 bombers during World War II because they could not be produced near New London due to war restrictions placed on Connecticut by President Franklin D Roosevelt's Executive Order 9094. West Haven has experienced many changes over its history including becoming an agricultural center during the 19th century; becoming an industrial center during World War II; and later becoming a suburb after post-war suburban growth began in neighboring towns such as New Britain and Easton (which also became municipalities). Today, much of downtown west side remains commercial while residential neighborhoods are developed along present day Main Street eastward towards Southwick Manor where remaining bomber plant remnants can still be found today

In 1920, the United States Postal Service established ZIP Code 06605 as the zip code for all residents of the town including Northfield and Groton which had no vote on incorporation. In 1970, parts of South Windsor merged into West Haven while other parts continued to be separate municipalities until they were combined into one municipality in 1998—the current form with 34 villages and towns within its boundaries. In 2002, fire destroyed most of what remained of Saybrook Farmington after a heavy rainstorm caused flash flooding across much of southwestern Connecticut; this event made national news because it was also one of only two such events where videotape metes out justice according to law enforcement officials who used it to build prosecutions against criminals during that decade's " Crackdowns ."

The area around West Haven was first settled by Dutch and British colonists in 1624. In 1814, it became an outlying village on the eastern edge of new Hartford Township. It was incorporated as a town in 1837. On May 25, 1912, it merged with neighboring East Haven to form what is now called New Haven–Norwalk metropolitan area
