In 1786 two important events took place inWest Haven; one saw Judge Nicholas Sprague purchase 106 acres (40 hectares) southeast of present day Mount Hebron Road from Samuel Morse and settled there with his family; and another event occurred when Thomas Dongan paid $5 per acre (0.20 hectare) for land between present day Washington Avenue and Mount Hebron Road which he called "Dongan's Farm." This area would become known as Dongan's Valley because it lay within Hartford Township boundaries until it was annexed by Bridgeport in 1907. Over time much development took place around these initial sites including: further purchase of property by Deere & Company; growth in population due to industrialization; addition of schools (including an elementary school operated by Congregationalists before becoming an all Catholic high school); construction of roads and bridges; displacement or incorporation of other towns into Fairfield County during this time period The townspeople played an important role in developing their community through their involvement with various organizations such as: the Ladies Auxiliary Association; Water Supply Committee; fire departments starting up during this time period; founding/operation of newspapers such as The Republican (circa 1828); establishment of cemetery in 1892 During World War II many people served in various units located throughout Connecticut including: 2nd Lieutenant George Waddell who fought at Normandy beachhead When Fairfield County formed following Connecticut statehood on August 12th 1959 many residents chose to move away from Fairfield County because they felt that its government did not support them financially or socially Consequently over 60% percent - more than any other municipality -of current westhaven residents were born outside the borough limits . West Haven was first settled in 1638 by the Patrician family of Connecticut. In 1764, it became part of the Province of Connecticut. West Haven was chartered as a town on November 25, 1814. On July 4, 1833, it became a city and on January 1, 1868, it lost its charter as a city because of population growth.
