West Haven was founded on May 5, 1638 by Reverend Samuel Hoadley and Rev. John Eliot as a small settlement on the east bank of the Wethersfield River to provide safety from Native Americans. In 1795, it became part of Hartford County and was annexed by the city of Hartford in 1824. West Haven was named for one of its founders, Reverend Samuel Hoadley (1638-1712). A graduate of Yale College and an Episcopal priest who served as pastor at Westville Church in Watertown, Massachusetts before coming toHartford in 1638, Hoadley had harsh words for leaders in neighboring towns that did not share his religious beliefs: "I do not please me here with men I know to be hypocrites".[1] So when he heard about land west of the Wethersfield River being offered for sale near where he lived and preached his gospel message, he set out to find it and persuade those who would sell it to settle there permanently. He arrived on May 5, 1638 with a group including some friends and family members—the first permanent English settlers in what is now Hartford County.[2] That same year Governor John Wentworth issued a proclamation inviting all Englishmen living within limits of Connecticut to establish themselves "in every convenient place". Within days over thirty people had gathered around Hoadley's cottage at Easton Point on the Wethersfield River;[3] soon enough they formed into two companies and began trading goods they collected along their journey upriver: furs from Canada, saltpeter from Narragansett Bay,[4] cottonseed oil from Long Island Sound,[5] butter from cows brought overland by Pilgrim Fathers arriving several hundred years earlier[6][7][8][9][10]–and Jesuit priests looking for new converts among these early settlers were also attracted to this virgin country."[11] From this initial influx many other families followed suit., founding Congregational churches throughout what is now western Connecticut:[12][13] most notably Northampton Congregational (now Unitarian) Church which still stands today next door to Northwich Academy – one of only two nonsectarian high schools openadeonughly in America based upon academic standards rather than denominational affiliation.[14],[15],[16],[17]} In 1795 West Haven became part ofHartford County when it was annexed by the city of Hartford following its creation as one side result of then-Governor George Washington's decision that all towns withinHartford County should be consolidated into one municipality. The city's role as an economic engine helped lead to rapid growth within West Haven during its first century; businesses such as grocery stores opened up shop while factories manufacturing clothing shoes automobiles etc., created thousands jobs downtown while large housing projects were built right along Main Street. By 1960 over 60%of West Haven's workforce consistedof civilians employed within downtown businesses while 30%of residents resided outside urban areas due largelyto commuting difficulties caused by heavy traffic congestion concentrated near Interstate 84 leading into Hartford City Center through which much freight passing originated.} The population reached 24,957 by 2000 butdeclined sharply thereafter due mainlyto successive waves of Baby Boomer retirements/moving awayfrom cities towards rural homesteading[18],the adventof technology(Internetworking),economic recession culminating with 9/11,[19],and increased security concerns.}

By 1830, some 2,000 people lived within easy walking distance of each other near what is now downtown West Haven. At that time, Western New England’s most developed region consisted of farms with three or four miles between them and major markets—a rarity today In 1818, when Hartford County was created from parts ofHartford and Middlesex Counties,[1] West Haven joined it as one of its original townships.[2] At this time it consisted of just under 10 miles wide by 5 miles long with a population less than 1 thousand people When Hartford County merged into Bridgeport County in 1964,[3] all but two outlying townships (Westchester and Seymour) were included within the new county limits Since then there have been numerous expansions and annexations within Bridgeport County: White Sands Bayou ( annexed by Watertown in 1978), NorthEaston ( annexed by Danbury in 2002), Farmington Hills ( annexed by Milford on May 15th 2006)[4], Wethersfield[5], Goshen[6], Saybrook[7][8][9]), Enfield[10][11][12]. Most recently Stratford Township has been absorbed intoBridgeportCounty too

In 1868, part of what is now North Branford annexed West Haven; this merger made North Branford one of the first municipalities in Connecticut to be formed outside of Hartford County. In 1893-1894, parts of Derby and Waterbury merged with West Haven to form what is now Easton. On February 14th 1912, Greenwich Township merged into West Haven as well. Residents voted in April 2011 to change their name from "West Haven" to "Easton". The vote happened after years where residents lobbied for an update to theirTown website that showed only Easton as an option instead of both names. The old website featured just "Westhaven" as an option while the new website features both names along with information about what each refers to
