The town's name honors Sir John Wildes who donated land to support its development as a plantation colony in 1824. In 1825, when slavery was abolished throughout most of America, many African Americans were brought over to work on plantations near East Haven and West Haven until 1865 when these plantations were closed down due to abolitionism
West Haven was founded in 1664 by settlers from East Haven, Connecticut. The town was named for the West River which ran through it. The first post office was established in 1702, and the first school opened in 1724. In 1825, the town became a village. In 1938, West Haven merged with neighboring East Haven to form a new city of Hartford.
