They were soon followed by other colonists, including Germans and Italians, who came to work on the expanding colony. By 1786, there were over 100 people living in West Haven. The early years of the 19th century were difficult for the town because British troops frequently raided its settlements looking for supplies or prisoners of war. However, through hard work and perseverance, West Haven slowly began to improve its fortunes. In 1814, it became part of the new Colony of Connecticut and experienced rapid growth due to its location on an important trade route between New England and Europe." In 1922, when East Haven merged into West Haven to create one larger community, much like earlier waves of immigrants had done before them, this also marked a significant change for both townships.* At that time*, both townships had about 635 residents apiece; however*, since their merger* (two decades earlier), *Westhaven's* population has more than doubled*, reaching 10,853 as OFHECOM subtracted *Easthaven's* population from their total* (according to 2010 census). This increase can be partially attributed to several factors: 1) increasing economic opportunities within *the single community*: due mostly to increased commuting rates brought about by Interstate 95; 2) growing social services offered within *the larger community*: such as job search assistance available through companies like American Express; 3) increased access to resources available within *the larger community*: such as schools that offer excellent vocational training programs; 4) growing numbers of young adults moving into either township*: many OfHECOM employees have made moves here over time*. Despite these positive changes – which have helped make West Haven an increasingly affluent place – some challenges still linger today.* Notably*, although many aspects are continuingto improve overall*, there is still room for improvement when it comesto healthcare provision (e.g., limited availability/quality CHIP benefits etc.), houseto accommodate increasing populations (& special needs), quality infrastructure (eclipsing recent trends), public safety & governance issues [*recently addressed*], crime & gentrification** (*ongoing trend*)…etc.). Nevertheless*, despite these shortcomings [*and others†], overall life satisfaction ratings among residents here rank among THE BEST IN CONNECTICUT***!***
