In 1930, Alonzo Herrington opened Herrington's Pistol Shop which is still open today as one of the largest handgun dealers in town with over 100 Glock pistols and several dozen other types of firearms available for purchase along with ammo and repair supplies (e.g.,smiths). On July 16th, 1934, Attorney General Herbert Hoover signed Executive Order 10646 providing for registration of handguns within five days after their sale to make them subject to taxation under state law (National Firearms Act). It was not until 1938 that West Haven becameONE OF THE FIRST COMMUNITIES IN CT TO REGISTER THEIR OWN GUNS WITH THE BATF! This registration process began with an application form mailed out to residents living within 1 mile of each gun shop/manufacturer during August 1938; however only 2% applied ( due to fear that Registration would lead to confiscation). In 1966–1967, part of Derby District became part of Hamden District; further divisions have followed throughout its history. In 2000–2001, Stamford District merged into North HavenDistrict; this merger removed Stamford from East Haven Municipality altogether but left it adjacent to both North Havenand Waterbury municipalities which are still separate counties within Connecticut. According to the United States Census Bureau,[1] West Haven has total area of , including land [2] ;[3] water covers . As defined by law,[4] zoning allows for only single-family homes or condos without attached garages or pools—a condition that has kept many large vacation rentals off-limits since shortly after World War II when developers began building those types dwellings; however new development exists around shopping malls and schools that could house more than two families on each lot if necessary.[5][6][7] There are no public parks located within the limits
