West Haven is a town inHartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,752 at the 2010 census. West Haven is part of the Hartford-Worchester metropolitan area. The town was first settled as part of what is now Hartford in 1636 by Puritan refugees from England and their families. It became a separate incorporated municipality in 1848. In 1764, Dr. Samuel Morse moved to West Haven with his family from Watertown, Massachusetts and began developing the Morse telegraph system over land that he had acquired along the Wethersfield River. The town's name derives from its location on Topsham Hill (now North Main Street). In 1819–20, when Connecticut ratified the United States Constitution, West Haven voted to become one of thirteen states represented in Congress; it did not join New York until January 3, 1785. On December 12, 1860 – two days after Abraham Lincoln won election as president – West Haven residents sent ballots to their government buildings for approval of secession from Connecticut due toincoln's Kansas–Nebraska Act separating Missouri and Nebraska into two territories without representation in Congress; this vote was nullified by state officials because no local property or person could be considered constituents of both territories. During World War II much of what is now downtown West Haven was destroyed during German bombing raids which left extensive damage including several blocks of stores and homes within one block center west of High Street between Market and Elm Streets; these events are known collectively as "The Blitz". After 1945 much reconstruction took place with new housing being built near Easton Avenue (now Elmwood Avenue) where many artifacts were recovered during that time including a cannonball used by Colonel John Wilkinson during Battle of Bunker Hill on April 19th 1775 which still resides today at Greenmount Cemetery adjacent to Central Park South entranceway just off I-84 exit ramp (Exit #124). On November 14th 2006 the old Post Office building located at 245 Elmwood Ave burned down leaving little evidence behind save for some firebrands still attached to poles around inside Formerly Therese McDonald’s bedroom window which later also caught on fire causing more damage thereby resulting in her loss $50000 US dollars worth ornaments she had collected over many years
