West Haven is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 26,569 at the 2010 census. West Haven is part of the Hartford–New London metropolitan area. It lies along the banks of the River Merrimac and has a rich history dating back to its founding by English settlers in 1630 as a small town named Westchester on an estate belonging to Sir Ferdinando Wetherall. The name "West Haven" derives from "Wetheral", one of the original twelve towns in Connecticut. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now West Haven were French traders who founded Fort Orford on Nicholas Street in 1630. The town was renamed Westchester after Lord Wetheral's estate, which lay just south of present-day West Haven. In 1714, when HMS Essex sailed through the harbor and saw land that could only have been Herefordshire, it became apparent that this must be where they were looking for their new home; thus, instead of calling the town Eastchester (as had been done previously), they changed it to Herefordshire Village and began marketing it as their new home base for commerce andsettlement east of New York City. In 1810, John Morse purchased an acreage on Church Street between High Falls Road and Main Street from James Caldwell for $2,000 cash. Morse Dam was built here during World War II to impound excess water from Long Island Sound so that naval ships could approach New London without fear of grounding or sinking while underway. The dam also created much local employment during World War II due to its manufacturing capabilities; however, today most large dams are operated by federal agencies such as USDA or EPA). In 1827 Samuel Colt acquired 350 acres east of Main Street from Colonel Hathaway for $5 per acre ($40 per square mile). This included what is now central town west of Route 9A including parts of current day North Walkerville and Southwalkerville streets northward along river bank until reaching present day Whitehall Road within 2 miles (3 km) of American Quaker Meeting House before turning northeast towardstown center across Mill Pond which forms village limits with Haverhill about 5 miles (8 km) away). northwestern corner parcel extending upriver from pond into private lot owned by late General Nathan Hale where resided early settler Captain Jobson prior to his execution following Battle Of Saratoga; thence northeasterly along line Jobsons property bisected by road coming down stream thence easterly across private lot ending at intersection with old Indian Path leading out roundabout onto public highway running near present day Whitehall Road servicesite run by Town Manager bearing right Agricultural lands east side creek entering entrance via narrow opening formed between two high rocks situated close together over groundwater deep below surface)). Mr Colt leased this tract backto Colonel Hathaway subject thereto agreement whereby Col Hathaway sold same again lots & rights therein unto Worcester County’s Surveyor etc.). In 1832 Samuel Colt received title deed from Colonel Hathaway’s widow Ann Mifflin for 640 acres extending northeasterly 3/4 mile (1 km) on shoreline Of Hagadah Creek To Richfield Center aforesaid containing 12 dwellings & 2 stores comprising site now occupied By Richfield Inn & other buildings situate upon upland capable Of accommodating 400 people.) On July 1st 1830 Abraham Darby made application for charter membership in Asbury Unitarian Church vestry having meeting house erected thereon July 4th 1830 under sanction & direction of Revd Ezra Stroud newly arrived From England With many others applying For Charter Membership At That Time There being but One Vestry And One Pastor ordained Without any Congregationalists Present (& That Reverend Ezra Stroud Who Was Elected To Be A Pastor By Our Parish Committee)) recalled When Application Was Made He Had expressly Greeted All Applicants Which Is Evident From His Petition printed Below*) We Meet next Thursday Evening Afternoon pursuant To Resolution Passed In Vestry
