Ammunition production began in the early 1800s, and ammunition stores were built throughout the town. In 1907, ammunition manufacturers merged to form Winchester Arms Company. Ammunition production continued until the end of World War II, when it was replaced by explosives production. The first record of ammunition being used in West Haven is from 1815. That year, a group of farmers set up shop in what is now West Haven and started manufacturing gunpowder from local crude materials. The earliest firearms made here were pistols and rifles made from shot or deer horn that had been ground into powder form. Gunpowder manufactured in this manner was stored away for use during wartime because it could not be easily detonated by fire or other means. In 1820, a store called "The Arsenal" was opened at the intersection of Main Street and South Orange Street inWest Haven. This store became one of the largest ammunition stores ever operated in America at that time. It contained both storage capacity for munitions as well as sales outlets for buyers/sellers of guns and ammo alike." Winchester Arms Company was formed on November 3, 1907 with Samuel Colt as its initial shareholder (he would later become CEO). At its height under Mr Colt’s leadership Winchester arms company produced more than 100 million rounds of ammunition per year across over 350 different brands including Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRA), Remington Arms Company (Ricochet), Browning Firearms Corporation (BFC), Benelli Manufacturing corporation (BEN) among others." Mr Colt left Winchester arm company after World War I to found his own company which would eventually become Ruger Firearms Corporation

West Haven is part of the Bridgeport-Stonington-Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Derby to the north, Watertown to the east, and Danbury to the south. The name "West Haven" originated with English settlers who named it after their home village of Wetheral on the River Ouse in Northamptonshire, England. The first settler in what is now West Haven was Captain John Hezekiah Weston who arrived from Boston in 1764 and founded a hut near what is now Main Street. From this early settlement growth began as more people moved into West Haven from other parts of Fairfield County including Derby and Watertown which were then part of Norwichhire. In 1814 Oliver Hazard Perry came through Norwalk on his way to join General James Kieft's army at Battle of Bunker Hill and stopped at Weston's house for refreshment before continuing his march westward. In 1835 both towns united under one common government when they formed part of Hartford Township which became Fairfield County when Connecticut statehood was granted to the US on February 14th, 1821. Prior to this time all land within Fairfield County belonged either directly or indirectly (through Connecticut Company) to various proprietorships such as Otis & Hennepin or Yale College Ives Associates etc., making it difficult for residents to form cohesive communities without unduly affecting their individual holdings or political power structures within their respective municipalities. This situation changed with Hartford Township’s incorporation as a town providing residents with voting rights not only within their own municipality but also across municipal boundaries into adjacent townships/counties thereby creating an enabling environment for cohesion among its citizens and encouraging centralized planning that culminated in present day West Haven’s development as an affluent bedroom community annexed by neighboring Bridgeport over time while concurrently developing its public services infrastructure such as waterworks and education Department which has since become one of Connecticut’s most renowned institutions along with several major employers including Colt Firearms Manufacturing Corporation whose products are prominently displayed throughout central CT
