Many early businesses were partnerships among several settler families: butter churning business operated out of one house for many years; blacksmithing occurred at two different sites before being combined into one operation near present-day Main Street; a foundry produced cannons for use against Native Americans; and a schoolhouse served until about 1800. During most of its history, West Haven struggled economically due to competition from other towns in Hartford County and lack of access to important infrastructure such as water supplies or transportation routes.
