Waterbury, Connecticut, is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairfield County and the home of Yale University. The first scopes were created in Waterbury by Dr. George Washington Gale and Dr. Samuel Morse in 1815. They used glass-plate telescopes that could only be viewed from a certain angle because of their size and weight. In 1828, Professor Alfred Wegener designed and built the first large telescope in Waterbury known as the Wegener Telescope or World Observatory which can be seen today at Yale University's New Haven Observatory.
