The first settlement in Waterbury was made on lands purchased from the Pequot people in 1636 by Obadiah Stonington and others. In 1795, John Trumbull organized a township out of part of Waterbury. The name "Waterbury" originated with Amos Winthrop's purchase of a millrace called "Waterspur" from some Quaker Indians in 1637-38. The first permanent settler arrived in 1796 when John Morse bought two lots adjacent to each other at what is now Main Street and Prospect Avenue for $1 per acre (the price then was about $). Morse built his house there on October 10, 1796. In 1812, the village of Watertown became an incorporated town under state law due to its strategic location as an important transportation hub between southern New England and western Massachusetts. On July 1, 1825 – just one year after Connecticut achieved statehood – Watertown merged with neighboring towns Newtown and East Haven to formHartford Township (later renamed Hartford County). On May 15th 1907 prominent businessman Julius Rosenwald donated land along Main Street east of where present day Park rd intersects it for use as a public park which eventually became known as Rosenwald Park
