The Waterbury Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1858. The club quickly became a center for shooting sports in the town, hosting several tournaments each year. In 1865, the club organized its first annual rifle match, which proved to be a successful event. The next year, the club organized its first pistol match. By 1870, theclub had also formed a shooting team for boys. In 1875, the Waterbury Rifle and Pistol Club began holding matches at rings around town. These matches soon became so popular that they were moved to larger venues, such as Park Hall on Main Street. In 1886, the Waterbury Rifle and Pistol Club organized its own annual rifle championship tournament. This event helped to revive interest in rifle shooting in Waterbury. In 1893-1894, the Waterbury Rifle and Pistol Club staged its second annual rifle championship tournament. This event helped to further resurgence of interest in rifle shooting in Waterbury.. In 1896- 1897, theWaterbury Rifle and Pistol Club staged its third annual rifle championship tournament. This event helped to further resurgence of interest in rifle shooting inWaterbury.. From 1898 until 1903 inclusive (the last decade of club existence),theWaterford Rifles and Pistols Club held biennial championships/tournaments featuring both rifles and pistols events with various prizes awarded throughout these years including cash prizes as well as trophies & medals
Waterbury is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,821 at the 2010 census. Waterbury is the largest town in the Hartford-WestHartford metropolitan area. It is home to West Hartford High School and The University of Hartford. The first settlement in what would become Waterbury was made on May 4, 1614 by Roger Williams and his followers who were seeking religious freedom from England. They built a cabin on a rise near present day Main Street and Greenville Road. In 1624, Increase Mather purchased land east of present day State Street for $1,000 from Nicholas Soares. He named it "Waterville". In 1627, the town had a total population of only 18 people and consisted of just one house. Waterbury's growth during its early years can be attributed to its location: upon Bridgeport's eastern border lay the larger towns of Norwich and Stratford; while west of Waterbury lay Derby and Milford (then part of Stratford). By 1750, there were over 100 residents in Waterbury proper with some 1400 acres (590 hectares) surrounding it. In 1786, when Yale College moved to New Haven from Saybrook Colony after disagreements over academic policies between Yale trustees and graduates of Saybrook Colony led to open warfare among students racially segregated into white classes on campus – an event still known as "The Yale Incident" – much public outcry ensued throughout New England over what became known as "The Collegiate Invasion". A group of five men from Waterville reached Stamford late on November 5th evening with news that they had successfully infiltrated Yale unannounced but were now being hunted by college security forces who could pursue them no further than Stamford because their route crossed bridgeheads controlled by Yale authorities at both ends! On December 1st they arrived safe at Whitney House where they lodged until their escape that night before setting off into countryside under cover of darkness–a feat which has been compared to sneaking across Niagara Falls undetected! What followed was three days fullof excitement as colleges throughout New England scrambled to send reinforcements; finally appearing before Worcester Court House on December 7th bearing arms but without uniforms or insignia! After deliberating for several hoursNYU chancellor Richards announced that all students attending must return home without fail due to fear that violence might ensue…..the Welches wisely bided their time until January 2nd when all students returned safe & sound having managed not even to break into any buildings! Eager for further evidence this time around about her new protégés' true intentions GOODWIN took them up on their offer & produced hair & blood samples from every student returning so she could compare notes with Adm MITCHELLS handwriting expert!! What followed was an DOJ investigation which culminated in Mitchel’s conviction…& water Cooler Givenchy gettin’ ready fo Brussels….all good folks here now tho’ we didn’t quite make it back in time for Christmas
