In 1768, Waterbury became an incorporated town when it voted to become one withHartford City throughout much being influenced by its large neighbor to the south – especially during its incorporation process where Hartford City tried very hard to keep Watertown separate from its larger sister city while also wanting some measure of autonomy within their own municipality (euphemistically called “self-government”).
